CREATIVITY (in my mind)
Creativity
according to me is the ability to make, create or design something of a
particular use or importance to society and the world at large. This can be
something that already exists and improving it in an extraordinary way, or
something that has not been done yet, something original, of which in my view,
is almost impossible. I personally believe everything that exists now is an
improvement of one thing before it, and in honest truth, most original ideas
have long been exhausted. Austin Kleon explains this in better detail in his New
York Times best seller of 2012 steal like
an artist.
I feel we
cannot view something as “creative” if it does not serve a particular purpose
or is not recognised for any importance in our lives. Creativity results in
meaningful products all the time. If we cannot find a use for it or appreciate
it in some sort of way, then let’s be real, it has no value. It is practically
insignificant! Like a picture to a dog, you think it sees it and reminisces on
all the good times you had with it? Okay, bad example! But admit it, it’s
funny. Okay, you are still not laughing. Well, this is awkward!!! My point is
that, if nobody wants or needs it, then I feel it shouldn’t even exist.
Now, we
cannot deny that some people are generally deep, technical thinkers, and this
is how they are able to come up with great ideas and exceptional work. It is
not a bad thing, really. I do, however, think the best portrait for creativity
is simplicity of thoughts, designs and creations in any field of practice one
is in. Be it photography, writing design and the rest. Your carrier is still as
important too if I didn’t mention it.
As we
discussed... alright! Let’s be honest. We didn’t discuss it. I mean, it can’t
be a discussion if one of us is talking and one is doing all the listening or
in this case, reading! Let me rephrase that. “As I said”... now, that makes
more sense. AS I SAID, it is almost impossible to think of anything original.
Almost everything in this day is an improvement of what existed before it. Of which
brings me to my next point. Creativity always has to be inspired by something
or someone. There should be a reason as to why we make and improve things. So
with all this said, to me, creativity is the ability to simply come up with
ideas to solve problems and to improve on what already exists into something
better.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more to what you've said, but just to add though.I think if someone creates something by improving something already existing then people should be able to notice the difference (the improvement)..thats where the excitement begins.I think its very important that a creation should portray its uniqueness,I may not know the motivation of the creator if im an admirer. And maybe,I might just never get the chance to meet the creator to explain to me..But the creation its-self can be able to influence my decision about it and end up inspiring even before the explanations follow. So for me,creativity is also about being unique.
ReplyDeleteAnd I couldn't agree more with your input. i'll make sure to edit this out and fit in your point of view.
DeleteI find this rather appalling. Why must creativity be validated by society? If I make an experimental short film and keep it on my hard drive, it does not make it any less creative because the masses have not seen it! It's the same as saying because society has not seen my penis that automatically
ReplyDeletemakes me a woman. While we're at it, what
constitutes creativity? Creativity is like god or
romance or beauty… it is not the same to you as it is to me. Thus, there is no way you could possibly sum it up. Do attempt if you like though. Original ideas are impossible? Now that right there is blasphemy!

Tokoloho, i am so sorry to say, but your interpretation of what i said is wrong. What i said was, if it is of no use to society, then it is irrelevant. Not unless you bring a different argument that whatever it is you create is "good for nothing". Then it would be a never ending conversation. And anyway... this is just another person's point of view. Please remember that much.
